Foeniculum vulgare

Origin: Mediterranean

Common use: Fennel seed is antiseptic and secretolytic,or it encourages the secretion of saliva and gastric juices.

It also used to stop stomach cramps, often added to laxatives to ensure gentle action. Fennel seed teas break up congestion caused by colds and allergies.

There are preliminary studies that suggest that regular consumption of fennel (as well as regular consumption of green beans, mushrooms, oranges, prunes, and celeriac) might slow the progression of osteoporosis. Powdering makes fennel a less estrogenic herb, that is, less likely to stimulate the production of estrogen in women, a characteristic that may be desirable or undesirable depending on the user.

Fennel seed teas are helpful for colicky infants, but fennel seed oil should never be given to infants or young children because of the danger of spasms of the throat.

When asked what is the best tea for stress we usually remind people why we are so careful to say our focus it actually herbal tea, because the best herbs for stress, in our opinion, have very little to do with tea (i.e. Camellia sinensis). If you have met our team around Houston in our store or at an event then you know that our favorite herbs for stress are several including calming herbs such as; chamomile, hemp seed and lavender. We also like adaptogenic herbs such as maitake mushrooms, ashwanganda root, maca.

The best part about adaptogenic herbs is that they balance the system at a biological level helping your body cope with the biochemical response to stress. The other thing to note is that these herbs tend to rebuild the system and benefit you in other ways. Ashwanganda not only helps you manage stress, but it also increase energy levels and helps with anxiety. Maca is used for a basket of health issues including hormone balance, low energy and low libido. Maitaka mushroom has been researched for it benefits to cancer patients and autoimmune diseases. Many of these adaptogenic herbs are not recommended for long term continuous use by herbalists and none of them are recommended for pregnant or lactating women.

BTW- For long term use or pregnant women calming herbs are more commonly recommended to manage stress and anxiety in conjunction with behavioral changes such as regular meditation.

Don’t forget the circulation boosting herbs used for stress management such as ginseng, gotu kola, eleuthero which increase circulation especially to the brain. Eleuthero, also called Siberian Ginseng, is used by many athletes to cope with physical stress to the body and promote rejuvenation. It is also used for energy in many herbalist tonics.

Finally there are herbs such as St John’s Wort which which believed to inhibit biochemical depressors such as serotonin. How St John’s Wort contributes to stress relief is still a subject of heavy research.
