[UPDATED ARTICLE BELOW]Currently the FDA prohibits the use of Stevia as a sweetener in food products and beverages. To elaborate stevia based sweeteners created by Coca Cola and Pepisco have been approved by the FDA for commercialization. In 1991 the FDA labelled Stevia as an "unsafe food additive." Around 2008 the FDA issued a "no obligation" letter to including stevia as a food additive in time for the release of Truvia(Coca-Cola and Cargill) and Purvia (Pepsico).

The Laughing Leaf: Stevia

In the 1990s the Federal Drug Agency (FDA) banned the stevia leaf for consumptions after receiving an "anonymous" letter. The reasoning was the lack of toxicology information on this naturally occurring plant used for 100s of years by Native Americans and for decades by Asian countries with no known side affects. Additional bans on this plant surfaced a few years after in Europe and other parts of Asia. It was not until the end of 2008 that the FDA passively approved the stevia extract, steviol glycoside, as a food additive and sweetener for Pepsi Co and Coke in their new products PurVia and Truvia.

We may never know who wrote the "anonymous" letter that resulted in a ban on an all natural American plant that could've contributed to the reduction of obesity in America. We may never know why actions were taken that resulted in ....
