| Recently, Prevention Magazine sent me a promotional issue that contained “Secrets To Fuller Thicker Hair At Any Age.” They said, by age 50, women experience some kind of hair loss and offered two secrets. Secret #1: “Many pros suggest a scalp massage for women with thinning hair.” Doctors tell them that a massage increases circulation to the scalp, stimulating hair follicles to supply nourishing nutrients needed for hair growth. They suggest a very superficial massage technique that will never provide the stimulation needed to increase circulation. So I would like to rewrite their suggestions with more detail and accuracy. I agree that massage is absolutely essential. It is stress that causes tension in the scalp because it constricts blood supply to the follicle. When the blood supply is stressed, the diminished flow of blood begins to allow the strands to thin and eventually to fall out. It is the blood supply that supplies the nutrition to the follicle and keeps the hair strong and pliable. I believe another cause for hair strands to weaken is acid pH levels in the body. When we have an acid pH, the blood flow is constricted. Our pH is affected by the foods we consume. Which foods are the culprits? You guessed it! Acid forming foods like refined sugars, flours, alcohol, wine, meats, and sodas. Optimal hair foods are whole foods, that grow from the ground, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. When you have your scalp massaged, pinch the scalp and turn it red. When it turns red, the blood is flushing the follicle. Standing on your head may sound crazy, but it’s a valid way to improve blood flow to the scalp. Or you can have your mate perform a nightly ritual and give you a head, neck and shoulder massage. Kneading the scalp also works to flush blood into the follicle. Just like kneading bread, use the palm of your hand and squeeze the scalp and be careful not to pull the hair. | |||||||
